About Government Rebates for Heat Pumps in Canada

The Government of Canada provides rebates for new heat pumps to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and help homeowners lower their energy bills.

To receive the rebate, you will need to submit an application. A certified contractor will then conduct an initial audit. After that, you will receive a list of recommended upgrades, and you must complete at least one of the recommendations to proceed. Once the upgrade is complete, you will receive an energy audit to apply for a heat pump government rebate.

Please note that the conditions of the programs may change, so check the information in official sources when choosing a particular program.

Available federal government heat pump rebate programs

If you’re looking to upgrade your heat pump, you may qualify for two government programs offering significant rebates. Each program has its unique benefits and eligibility criteria, so let’s explore your options:

Oil to Heat Pump Affordability Program

The Fuel Oil to Heat Pumps program allows homeowners who use fuel oil to heat their homes to switch to electric heat pumps. By installing an air-source heat pump system in a cold climate, you can save thousands of dollars on your heating bills and contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Note that hybrid heat pump systems for cold climates, such as central ducted heat pumps combined with an oil, gas or propane furnace, are not eligible for grants. The program covers up to $10,000 for the purchase and installation of air source heat pump systems. Other work such as electrical and mechanical upgrades and the safe removal of oil tanks are also covered.

Eligibility requirements

To participate in the program, you must provide documents confirming the ownership of the property and a commercial offer from the selected contractor, as well as provide the social security number. You also must show proof of purchasing at least 1,000 litres of heating oil to heat your home in the 12 months leading up to the time of application.

Home Renovation Savings Program

Ontario homeowners have an exciting opportunity to improve their home’s energy efficiency and save money, thanks to the Home Renovation Savings Program. You can receive up to $7,500 for cold climate air source heat pumps and up to $12,000 for ground source heat pumps.

Typically, rebates will be paid within 30 to 60 days after the application is approved. Unlike standard programs, it is inclusive, catering to homes using natural gas, electricity, and other fuels. Previously, these rebates were limited to those using electricity for heating.
