About the Government rebate for heat pumps
The Government of Canada provides rebates for new heat pumps to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and help homeowners lower their energy bills.
To receive the rebate, you will need to submit an application. A certified contractor will then conduct an initial audit. After that, you will receive a list of recommended upgrades, and you must complete at least one of the recommendations to proceed. Once the upgrade is complete, you will receive an energy audit to apply for a heat pump government rebate.
Please note that the conditions of the programs may change, so check the information in official sources when choosing a particular program.
Available heat pump government rebate programs
You can apply for 3 programmes, each with its benefits and conditions. Let’s break down each of them:
Canada Greener Homes Initiative
The Canada Greener Homes Initiative helps homeowners make their homes more energy-efficient and eco-friendly. You can receive a grant of between $125 and $5,000, with a maximum grant of $600, to conduct an EnerGuide assessment before and after the renovation.
The program encourages homeowners to improve the energy efficiency of their homes, such as by improving insulation and installing high-efficiency heating systems to reduce energy losses and protect the environment.
Eligibility requirements
To be eligible for the Canada Greener Homes Initiative, you must meet specific criteria like owning a property and residing in it. Visit the official government website or consult with a qualified representative to check the current eligibility requirements and other important factors.
Oil to Heat Pump Affordability Program
The Fuel Oil to Heat Pumps program allows homeowners who use fuel oil to heat their homes to switch to electric heat pumps. By installing an air-source heat pump system in a cold climate, yous can save thousands of dollars on your heating bills and contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Note that hybrid heat pump systems for cold climates, such as central ducted heat pumps combined with an oil, gas or propane furnace, are not eligible for grants. The programme covers up to $10,000 for the purchase and installation of air source heat pump systems. Other work such as electrical and mechanical upgrades and the safe removal of oil tanks are also covered.
Eligibility requirements
To participate in the program, you must provide documents confirming the ownership of the property and a commercial offer from the selected contractor, as well as provide the social security number. You also must show proof of purchasing at least 1,000 litres of heating oil to heat your home in the 12 months leading up to the time of application.
Clean Home Heating Initiative
The Clean Home Heating Initiative is a program offered by the Government of Ontario to provide rebates of up to $4,500 to homeowners who switch to electric heat pumps with smart controls. The program collaborates with Enbridge to help reduce greenhouse gas and carbon emissions.
Eligibility requirements
To apply, an applicant must have a home in one of the following cities in Ontario: Ajax, Barrie, London, Peterborough, Pickering, St. Catharines, Sault Ste. Marie or Whitby, Ontario. In addition, you must be Enbridge Gas customer and have a central air conditioner or plan to replace or install a new one or have a condensing gas furnace and WI-FI to access smart controls in their homes.
